Breeding Resources

To be a responsible breeder it is important to be aware of the requirements in your State or Territory as it relates to breeding dogs, as well as the requirements for the Murray River Retriever Association and Dogs Australia, if you are a member of one of the associated State Dog bodies.

To assist Recognised Breeders we have compiled a list of references that you should be aware of when breeding dogs in your state. The links included below are a guide only. It remains your responsibility to be aware of any legal requirements for your state. There may also be times when the requirements contradict each other. In this case, please feel free to reach out to the Association. This can be done by posting on the MRRA Recognised Breeders Facebook group.

Please be aware that there may be different rules depending upon how your State categorises the size of breeders.

If you are new to breeding, the MRRA recommends the free Breeder training provided by the Victorian State government as an overview to the breeding process. This resource can be found at: Breeder Training Course (click on the link to open in a new browser tab)

MRRA

  • Breed Description – All Recognised Breeders should be clear on the standard that has been approved by Dogs Australia (formerly the ANKC) and make the best breeding decisions and pairing selection you can to keep Murray River Retrievers both looking and functioning as they have for 150 years. The Murray River Retriever breed desciption was developed with the Murray River Retriever Association and reviewed by a number of invited traditional Murray breeders to ensure that it was consistent with the history of our breed.
  • Dog Register Rules Mar2023 – Please ensure that you are aware of the current MRRA Dog Register rules which includes information on breeding requirements as established by the MRRA

Dogs Australia (formerly the Australian National Kennel Council or ANKC)

  • Dogs Australia establishes its rules via its member state bodies. If you are a member of any of these bodies you will be required to follow their requirements. Links for the state member bodies will be provided in the state links below.
  • The following link is to a useful reference page from the ANKC on categorisation of breeders into sizes and things to be undertaking in your breeding practices
